When the Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriages, America generally, and the gay community specifically, celebrated. Same-sex marriages, and the gay and lesbian movement is more mainstream than ever. While the national discussion has been brought to the forefront, at the state level, conversations continue.
Most visitors to the Albuquerque area of New Mexico associate the city with hot air ballooning. The city of Albuquerque, bisected by the Rio Grande River, lies within the northern and upper edges of the Chihuahuan Desert. Ranging from 4, feet above sea level near the Rio Grande Valley to over 6, feet in the foothills of the Sandias, Albuquerque has one of the highest elevations of any major city in the United States.
I don't know of any places in the city which are not gay friendly. Oaxaca is a gay friendly city and I have never come across any anti-gay sentiment, at least over the past 15 years or so. In fact there is an over-representation of gay expats in the city in numbers relative to the straight expat population, although I am not integrally involved with either group; it just appears rather obvious.

Albuquerque is a fascinating and dynamic city, sometimes overlooked by travelers. Similarly, the city is under the radar as a queer destination. But the city and region are very queer-friendly, and there are many reasons why LGBTQ travelers should consider New Mexico's largest city for their next trip.
